The Ironman World Championship took place on October the 12th in Kona and proved to be another epic event for the many athletes that took part.
Thetrilife were delighted to be represented by two of our female athletes who competed alongside the other 2134 participants. Both ladies showed remarkable dedication to reach this point in their triathlon career and we take immense pride in knowing that we helped to them to achieve this amazing accolade.
Jane Wiley, coached by Mike Redshaw, put in a phenomenal performance finishing 7th in her age group (55-59). Jane pulled in an overall time of 11:25. Hats off to you Jane – what a fantastic year!
Jo Gundle, coached by Dean Hughes, also did a great job, finishing in a time of 13:30 despite having a very tough run. Well done Jo, our Athlete of the Year 2012.
Many congratulations to thetrilife ladies and their coaches.
Alongside our own athletes, thetrilife had five Team Freespeed Virgin Active sponsored athletes competing at Kona. Some of you will have met these athletes at our preparation days this summer.
Sam Baxter was impressive as the first British Amateur to finish, with a time of 09:04, placing him 15th in his age group (30-34).
For Alison Rowatt, this was her first ever Ironman and she proved herself to be an amazing athlete, finishing 2nd place in her age group (30-34) with a time of 09:44.
As for Catherine Faux – wow! Catherine had an awesome race, finishing in 9:15 and becoming the female amateur World Record holder, beating the previous time holder by 17 minutes. No surprise then that Catherine won her age group (25-29) and finished 10th overall!
Matt Molloy put last year’s demons to rest finishing in 9:19 (including a 53 min swim) and 11th in his age group.
Unfortunately for Declan Doyle he suffered a torn calf during the run which meant that he walked the last five miles but he still finished in a time of 11:01.
