“Great camp, made even better by the quality of coaching, lovely environment to train in and loads of food!”
The team are back from sunny Spain! A wonderful week spent with a great group of our athletes – keen, entertaining, ready to work hard when needed and ready to ease back when told by their coaches.
Desert Springs, the resort in the region of Almeria, where we have based our camp for the last 4 years was as welcoming as ever and were fully prepared to cater for the particular nutritional requirements of our group, which was a little different to the golfers staying at the resort, but more in line with the county cricket teams that also use the resort for winter training.
Every morning former elite long distance athlete and lead coach Rich Jones and Ashleigh Ahlquist ran the swim sessions and delivered a mix of technique and endurance – perfect for this time of year. 3 lanes in a 25 m pool – plenty of space for all abilities.
But this camp is all about getting out on the bike – enjoying the exhilarating coastal roads, the smooth tarmac, and the “accepting” drivers. After the first ride of the week we divided into two groups – the first being the long distance athletes and the second being made up of mid and standard distance athletes. As in previous years, one of the highlights was the 10k climb up to Bedar – breathtaking views and a spectacular descent. The camp caters for all levels of experience – no one is left behind – not even me! The rides were varied in length and intensity and there was, for the standard distance group, the now legendary ice cream stop! See more about this on our Facebook page.
Most days a run was included – sometimes short and off the bike at other times longer – a chance to test the legs. Duncan and Ashleigh made sure we stretched properly after the hard work. Such a joy to be able to perform yoga poses and stretch in the late afternoon sunshine.
We will be sure to be going back in 2016 so if you are interested in coming next year register your interest early by emailing mike@thetrilife.com and watch out for our Early Bird offers on our website.
